The Surfabilly Vibe!

"I'm totally Jonesin' to start a surf rock band that could also play lots of other cool kinds of tunes, too." So began the conversation in Feb. 2019 as two soon-to-be bandmates were chatting about music. Our bass player (aka Billy Z) has loved the music and art of the late 50's through mid-60's since he was a kid and had recently become consumed with the idea of starting a surf band as an adult. Through a series of twists and turns our guitar player (Norm) and drummer (Brother Dave) decided they were all for it too and the journey was underway!

We started by listening to thousands of hours of music, reading books and watching lots of videos to get deeply into the heritage, history, music and culture of surf rock, rockabilly and vibe tunes. In fact, this is exactly where our name comes from - we play the instrumental surf rock of Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Centurians, The Sandals, Messer Chups, The Surfrajettes and others (Surf), rockabilly like Elvis, Stray Cats, Chris Isaak (abilly) and cool tunes we love that are not surf or rockabilly but have a great feel to them such as The Zombies, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Church and The Hollies (Vibe). Mix all those together with a healthy dose of fun and a blast of community connection and you have The Surfabilly Vibe.

So what should you expect when you book us for an event or catch us playing at your local venue? ENERGY! Lots and lots of high energy, super-fun entertainment while we play all the cool music, engage with people who are there and make sure everybody around us is having a great time! 

We are also extremely fortunate to have a bunch of wonderful guest star friends (e.g., Val from Berlin Calling, The Stealth Percussionist, Melissa from MeliEsco Music, KD from the Neverminds, Cyndi from the Yard Sale Kings, CC, Blair, Kris from Felix Pickles as well as The Funicular Project and other guests too!) who join us to make music together which makes it different every time you see us. So come out to have some fun, boost your local music scene and support all the venues who are making live music happen.
